It's April and I've decided to enter myself into two writing-based activities. I was going to call them competitions, but I don't really feel like I'm competing in either of them.
First up, the one you're reading, if you're reading this is BEDA (Blog EveryDay in April), which does pretty much exactly what it says on the tin. It was originally attempted by Maureen Johnson, in 2009. It also took the form of VEDA (Vlog EveryDay in April).
I'm not sure if I'll be able to complete the month's worth of blogs, but I'm going to give it a go.
The second thing I'm attempting is Script Frenzy, which I attempted last year, but failed miserably at.
The goal is to write at least 100 pages of script in the 30 days of April. I decided I'd take part a couple of weeks ago, and from that point started to think of characters and plot for the script I'm going to be writing. Which is more than I usually do when I attempt to write something. We'll see how it goes, if I don't have anything major to write about on any particular day of BEDA, there should always be news of Script Frenzy to update with.
With that said, onward to BEDA #1!
On Monday, Robyn and I set out for Glasgow. After arriving an hour too early for the train, we went and got some lunch at the Muckle, before going back to the train station and heading to Inverness to catch our bus. The journey down was fairly uneventful. We were sat infront of a woman who was going to Glasgow to see Kylie at the SECC, hearing her reassure her male friend that she wouldn't make him late to see Kylie was amusing.
Once in Glasgow, we met up with Dave who took us back to his new flat and gave us a quick guided tour. Siobhan came back not long after, having been out handing CVs into various places and we decided to go get some food, before going to a Pub Quiz that Dave had seen advertised.
We went to Republic Bier Halle, which does two for one pizzas, there are two in Glasgow, one of which Dave works at, which resulted in us getting our meals extremely cheap. The food was good and quite quickly after, we were making our way down Sauchiehall to Brunswick Cellars, where the Pub Quiz was being held.
The quiz was weird. In that the team with the most points after round one (a round with ten questions) had 14 points. There was no mention of bonus points for any question, so how that happened, I'm not sure.
When it was over though, we hadn't won. Nor had we come last though... So there's that.
We went back to Dave and Siobhan's flat, and watched Bubba Ho-Tep. Then we were treated to some videos that Dave and Siobhan had made while bored and jobless. They mostly involved easter chickens and after watching them, we made one of our own, before going to bed.
Sleep didn't go that great, I had around four hours in total. In the morning, I looked in the mirror and decided to go without a shower.
Robyn and I headed out around 11, after speaking to Siobhan for a bit, who had just come back from a job interview of sorts. We went and visited Dave at his work and had some breakfast/lunch, or Brunch, I guess... - it was at this point Robyn started to express her distaste for Charles Rennie MacIntosh. After 'Brunch', we headed to the Passport office. Unsure of exactly where it was, we stopped and asked a taxi driver.
"How far's the passport office?"
"Not far."
"Within walking distance?"
"For two young people like yourselves, yeah."
We didn't mention that we only had a set amount of time to get there, so that advice was no use. We then went to the nearest Taxi rank, at Queen Street Station and asked someone there.
"Should we get a taxi?"
"Well, that's up to you."
Again, no help. We ended up getting one and due to the route he took (one that was necessary, I'm sure) it did seem like it was worth while. However, upon leaving and walking back to town, we realised that we definitely could have gone without the Taxi and still gotten there on time.
At the passport office, we were let in after Robyn did her secret knock and checked over by the guards at the door. We were told to turn our phones off at all times in the building, we had to take all change, etc our of our pockets, so they could run a wand over us, to make sure we weren't packing any heat. Given the all clear, we went upstairs...
...and we left again around five minutes later.
After a quick stop off at Schuh, we hopped onto the subway and went to Kelvingrove Museum & Art Gallery, where we spent a couple of hours wandering around the massive building. We saw some cool stuff and had some fun, it's amazing the amount of stuff they have in there for it being free to enter.
Once we were satisified that we'd seen enough, we went back to Buchannan Street on the subway and met Grant, where after another couple shoe shop visits, we went to Starbucks for a bit and then headed to the passport office again, to pick up Robyn's passport, saying goodbye to Grant on the way.
With her passport in hand, we made our way back to the flat, visiting Primark and having my mind numbed a little on route.
Back at the flat, we gathered up our belongings and wrote a little "thank you" note to Dave & Siobhan, for letting us stay and headed back to the bus station. Stopping briefly to give Dave his keys and saying goodbye.
We got to the bus station, just as the bus was preparing to board. The bus we got was a CityLink Gold, something far too fancy for us.
Once the bus got going, a woman came down with a basket..
"Sandwich?"
"They free?!"
"Yes."
And so it was that the free things kept coming. Tea, Coffee, Soft Drinks... Tablet. She got off at Perth though, which put a stop to the service. Still. Amazing.
Once in Inverness, we made our way to the train station, where our train was waiting to leave. We got on, and sat down. The train was pretty quiet, apart from a drunk man, drunkenly singing along to various songs on someone elses phone.
Here is a video documenting the trip. Enjoy.
