I'm not sure why, but I'm in a blogging kind of mood right now, so I figured I'd get to it as I'm sure it won't last long. Strike while the iron's hot and other idioms of the like.
So far, 2011's been pretty good. No better or worse than 2010, exactly, but I've enjoyed the couple of months that have passed. No massive drama, which seemed to be all I blogged about toward the end of last year (with regards to my Granny and that whole situation) -- and things seem to be happening as well. We're getting out and doing things. Not big things, but things.
Our group has a pretty fun dynamic right now, something that I hope will last, despite the fact that some people aren't sticking around. We're hanging out less with the people that stop things happening and more with the people who say yes. We've gone Obama a few years after everyone else.
I did this last year to an extent too, but I'm making a conscious effort to always have a camera on me at all times, which isn't overly difficult considering I have my phone on me, with it's 8MP camera and 720p video capabilities, but still. I like taking photos and it's something I didn't do for a long time. Not because I wasn't going out, not because I didn't have my camera with me, but because I just never took it out and used it.
I managed to amass a pretty large gallery of photos on flickr last year and I ended the year with, what I think at least, was a good summation of the year gone by with the 2010 video. I'm definitely looking to have the same this year, in terms of photography, however instead of having a large video at the end of the year, I plan to document life a lot more, by uploading short videos. Snippets of what's been happening. Things I find funny and fun times we've had. Although 2010 served as a reminder at many points, it wasn't really about living in the now, as such.
It was due to this 'new' way of documenting that I decided to move back to youtube. I still stand by everything I said about the site, but it's also the site with the easiest ways of uploading -- especially from a mobile device, should I ever need to do that. For travelling, I plan to use my phone a lot more, with the blogger app, I can update the travel blog with a photo and some comments about that day without having to worry about finding a computer.
With that said though, there'll probably still be a video at the end of the year. It's become a tradition starting with the 2008 video, then the Your Town Christmas Special and then, last year, the 2010 video. It'll be interesting to see what crops up this year.
Also, I left facebook. I deleted the account. I didn't deactivate, I deleted. Gone. Can't go back. I don't miss it at all. The following quotes sum up why perfectly.
"Twitter makes me like people I've never met, Facebook makes me hate people I know in real life." - @shaylamaddox
"Facebook: Where you lie to your friends & family. Twitter: Where you tell strangers the truth."
I'm not against all social networking and I can recognise that there is a place for facebook in the world, it just didn't really have a place with me any more. If people really want to get a hold of me, they have to know my name. Google it and you find my site, which then gives them my email and twitter, both of which I get notifications for on my phone. So I'm almost never in a place where you can't get a hold of me, should you want to, I have flickr for photos and Dailymotion and Youtube for videos. There is nothing new that facebook can offer me.
Which brings me to this blog. I'm going to try and update fairly regularly (from now), but I'm not aiming to post once a week or anything like I attempted last year. We'll just see how it goes.
Adios.
